What is an Electronic Cigarette?
The device is a recent technological invention that simulates traditional tobacco smoking, without the tar, carcinogens and additives contained in tobacco smoking products. The common components are a rechargable lithium battery, atomizer, and a cartridge that contains a flavored vapor producing solution.
There are many types of E-cigarettes, and many sources for E-products on the market today. I have compiled information and recommended sources for you to make your shopping and personal research easier.
How does it work?
The battery is activated when a drag or "puff" is taken from the e-cigarette. The battery heats the atomizer which activates the solution in the cartridge, creating a vapor. (Many refer to e-smoking as "vaping"). Most e-cigs have a LED at the tip of the battery that lights when a drag is taken, simulating the action on a lit cigarette. Some LED's light red, but many light blue or another color to show others they are not smoking a real tabacco cigarette. The LED also is an indicator of battey charge status on some brands, such a Blu.
What is Vapor?
Vapor is released from the heating of the E-liquid solution contained in the cartridge. It simulates the act of smoking.
What is E Liquid?
E-Liquid, sometimes referred to as “juice” or “smoke juice”, is the solution in the cartridge that produces the vapor. Most E-Cig companies use the ingredient Propylene Glycol to produce the vapor, (although some offer a vegetable based alternative), with flavorings and nicotine if desired. Propylene Glycol is listed with the FDA and is in common use in various products. It is not deemed harmful. The consumer can choose to purchase the cartridges with various levels of nicotine that is included in the E-liquid. You can also purchase E-liquid separately to add to spent or new empty cartridges yourself (see tab on menu for sources and more information).
How much money can I save over tobacco products?
This is easy to calculate now and to verify later once you have been "vaping" for a week or so. Most people know the average amount of cigarettes they smoke a day, and how much they spend each week. After E-smoking you will be able to compare the two. How much you will actually save will of course depend on you, and how much you smoke now and how much you "vape". Most people save at least half or more of what they were spending on traditional cigarettes, and you can save even more if you extend your cartridges with E-Liquid. The largest outlay of money is in your starter pack that contains the batteries, chargers and atomizers. After that, you purchase new cartridges as you would cigarette packs or cartons when you want them. See each site for details on estimated longevity of hardware and cartridges.
